Living Green Walls

A living green wall is a garden that grows vertically, as opposed to horizontally, and is a wonderful solution for any property owner that has an interest in infusing nature into the heart of the home. It can be a stunning centrepiece and although it requires more maintenance than most other wall coverings, it brings energy and life to a room particularly where the design of furnishings and fittings is minimalist. Any well-lit position inside the home, would make a suitable environment to install a green wall.

Benefits provided by green wall installations are varied and depend on their location and design, though most share common benefits.

We live in a highly polluted ecosystem where toxic fumes infiltrate the air we breathe – even in our homes. The plants found in a living green wall can absorb pollutants efficiently in particular formaldehyde, VOCs and Carbon Monoxide whilst emitting energy rich oxygen. In addition to combatting pollution they also can reduce noise levels providing a tranquil environment in which to relax in. Externally the vegetation can dramatically reduce the need for additional cooling in the summer and in the winter will act as a blanket around the property to reduce heat loss and lower heating bills.

We are very keen at outset in our discussions with clients to establish the reason why they want to install a living green wall. A popular reason is that the client wants to make a visual statement and as such a feature wall will be designed with the visual impact central to the design. Typically costs are not a driving factor and plants are selected for their appearance and diversity in colour, shape or even scent.

We work with a professional contractor to ensure that the structure installed to hold the plants is suited to the client’s needs and the requirements of the property. As with any garden, the living green wall will need to be maintained and in time plants replaced. It may require several months’ growth before achieving the desired visual impact however, the diversity and enjoyment it brings to a home and its occupants will be a guaranteed talking point over the dinner table.
